Lorenzo Giorio graduated in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology at the University of Trieste (Italy) in December 2021. During his studies, he completed an internship at the IRCCS Burlo Garofolo Hospital in Trieste, where he focused on testing the effects of immunosuppressive drugs on intestinal organoids derived from pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Motivated by this experience and convinced that patient-derived organoids would play a key role in advancing our understanding of gastrointestinal diseases, he reached out to the IBD group in Leuven, where he could work as an international research fellow thanks to an Erasmus+ grant.
In September 2022, Lorenzo started his PhD at KU Leuven, focusing on developing an IBD-specific pre-clinical model for drug screening.
